33 Objects That Have Shaped Alpinism

Messner’s Philosophical

Reinhold Messner collects not only ascents of the highest mountain peaks, but also historical objects from the history of alpinism, which he presents in his museums.

Each of these objects has its own special story—and history was made with them: How an agricultural pick made the first ascent of the Ortler possible in 1804. What the »Piton Dispute« is all about. And how a pair of plastic shoes made Messner’s ascent of Mount Everest possible.

In passing, Messner tells us a little history of mountaineering, from the beginnings of alpinism to the alpine tourism of our days.

»His book “Pickel, Seil und Mauerhaken” is a tribute to those very simple tools that are still indispensable for mountaineers like him.«

Author

Reinhold Messner

Reinhold Messner, born in 1944, is the most famous mountaineer and adventurer of our time. As a climber, frontier crosser and »philosopher in action«, he has repeatedly set new standards: He was the first person to climb all 14 eight-thousanders and, together with Arved Fuchs, crossed Antarctica on foot. Today, he fights for an ecologically sustainable approach to nature, manages mountain farms and designs the Messner Mountain Museum at six locations. In addition, he now devotes himself to mountain film as an author, director and producer.
